著者は、OFFには友人のアメリカ人がやっている通訳、翻訳の仕事を手伝う、足立区に住む３７歳のタクシードライバー。フロントガラスから見える都会のワンシーンを切り取り、２カ国語（日・英）バージョンでお届けします。駅前にいるのは英会話学校だけではない。さて、今日の稼ぎはいくらかな？
【第１回】
私は会社に行き明け番集会に出る。新しい料金メーターの操作の説明である。私にはだいたい飲み込めた。しかし歳のいった運転手はなかなか解からない。彼らは何度も操作方法を聞いている・・・ 。歳のいった運転手は本当、機械の操作が苦手である。 ８時３０分、私は集会をこっそり抜け出して出庫した。 荷物を山積みしたトラックが私の前を走っている。 そのとき私は考えていた 。「台風が近づいているらしい・・・ まだ風も雨もないな・・・」。突然、トラックの荷台から発砲スチロールの蓋が私めがけて飛んできた、それを見た！私は危険を感じてすばやく身をかわす 。 発砲スチロールの蓋はフロントガラスにぶつかって飛んでいった。 なんともない！危険が去ってホッとする。 思う。私の反射運動は実際無意味であった・・・・ 。しかし、もし一万円札が飛んできたら、そのとき私は目と口を大きく開いてそして、それに噛み付く！ 間違いない。 午後３時雨が降り出した。 夕方、私は代々木公園のトイレに行く。 地面にはいろんなゴミが落ちている 。お金は・・どこにも落ちていない。 金目のものは空き缶だけである？売り上げ４０，０００円。
May 19th (Wed) 2004
I went to my company and attended a meeting. The company explained the operation of the new fare-meter. I understood, but many old fellows did not understand. They asked the company to explain the operating many, many times. Their operation of the machine was really bad. I escaped from the meeting and started to work at 8:30AM. A truck completely loaded was running in front of me. Then I thought a typhoon has been approaching Japan. Still there was neither wind nor rain. Suddenly a styrene foam lid flew towards me from the back of the truck. I looked it and felt fear. I dodged. The lid crashed against the windshield of my car and flew away. Next, I noticed the danger had disappeared and felt relieved. My reflex movement was really meaningless. But, if a 10,000 yen bill flew to me then I will certainly open my eyes and mouth very wide and bite it. The rain stated at 3:00PM. At evening I went to Yoyogi Park’s toilet. I saw many garbage on the ground. But, money could no be seen anywhere. The only valuable I could see was an empty juice can. I made 40,000 yen.
